CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced former AIADMK Minister V Sathiyamoorthy to five years imprisonment and his wife to two years, for amassing wealth to the tune of Rs 82 lakhs disproportionate to their known sources of income during 1991 to 1996.

Delivering the verdict on an appeal filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption against their acquittal by the trial court, Judge G Jayachandran also convicted Sathyiamoorthy's wife Chandra and imposed a fine of Rs five lakh each on them.

The Judge said they were convicted on the ground that the trial court had failed to consider the documents and materials placed by the DVAC.

Mr Sathiyamoorthy had served as the Minister in the first government headed by late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa from 1991 to 1996.
