SALEM: The Omalur court granted conditional bail to activist Piyush Manush and denied bail to actor Mansoor Ali Khan, both arrested for allegedly instigating farmers to protest against Salem airport expansion project, here on Friday.

Likewise, the Salem District Court granted anticipatory bail to Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator Seeman and denied bail to student-activist Valarmathi.

The Deevattipatty police arrested actor Mansoor on Monday last and activist Piyush the next day on charges of promoting enmity between groups and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony. They were remanded and lodged in Salem Central Prison.

Meanwhile, on Friday, the Omalur sub judge Ramesh granted bail to the activist on the condition that he should visit the Omalur police station daily and sign the register until further orders. The sub judge, however, denied bail to the actor.

Following the order, Piyush was released from the prison in the evening. Speaking to media persons, he denied instigating farmers against the government. He vowed to move the court against felling of trees for the project.

In a similar development, district court judge Mohanraj granted anticipatory bail to NTK leader Seeman and directed him to sign at the Omalur police station daily. The police had filed a case against him for instigating the farmers against the Salem airport expansion project in his speech at Omalur on May 12.

However, Valarmathi (22), a second year student of Periyar University who is known for her firebrand speech, was denied bail by the district court. She was arrested after she descended on Achankuttaipatti village on Tuesday, where the officials were measuring lands for the proposed Chennai - Salem greenfield highway, and spoke to the farmers, asking them not to surrender their lands for the project.

Why no bail for Valarmathi? She is a young woman and the bail must have been granted to her also.
