Armed men attack police personnel in Chennai, Kancheepuram

Three policemen were injured in two separate incidents when armed men attacked them in Kancheepuram and Chennai on Saturday and Sunday.

CHENNAI: Three policemen were injured in two separate incidents when armed men attacked them in Kancheepuram and Chennai on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday night, at Maraimalai Nagar in Kancheepuram, while Sub-Inspector Pradeep and Head constable Madhusoodanan were on night patrol, an unidentified man was found causing nuisance to the public.

When confronted, the man attacked the two policemen with a knife and escaped. The two sustained injuries, and a hunt for the suspect is on. In the other incident, a Chennai city policeman was injured. However, he caught two accused in spite of the injury.

Sembium intelligence division police personnel T Sivalingam was on duty in the early hours of Sunday when he found two men armed with weapons speeding past him. He chased the duo on bike and while catching them, they stabbed him in his hand and attempted to escape.

Despite the injury, Sivalingam caught the two and handed them over to the police station,” said a senior police officer.

The accused were identified by police as A Ramamoorthy (19) and S Bharathwaj (21). The police  seized a two wheeler from them.

Chennai Police Commissioner, A K Viswanathan, rewarded the intelligence division police personnel for his act of nabbing the duo on the bike.
