CHENNAI: The Kanathur police have registered a case against a group of men who, in two cars, allegedly chased a few women in another car along the East Coast Road on Saturday.

A press note from the Tambaram City police -- which mentioned the name of the complainant who is one of the victims -- said that special teams have been formed to identify the four-wheeler and arrest the suspects.

In her complaint, the woman said around seven to eight individuals in two cars intercepted the car she was travelling in near Muttukadu Bridge around 2 am on Friday. The woman said they chased her car till her residence and confronted her, alleging that she had hit their vehicle and fled, which claim she denied.

A viral video posted by the women on social media purportedly showed one of the suspects’ cars bearing the flag of the ruling DMK. One suspect was seen running towards the women’s car and banging its window. A case has been filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), besides section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

The incident attracted widespread criticism from opposition parties, with AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and BJP state president K Annamalai on Wednesday condemning the DMK for allowing law and order in the state to completely deteriorate.

Palaniswami said the police should file the FIR without leaking the details of the victims. Annamalai said the incident proved that there is no safety for women in Tamil Nadu at all.

PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss also demanded stringent action.
