HYDERABAD: Post-bifurcation of the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, the State government will rename it after social historian Suravaram Pratapa Reddy, Nizamabad MP K Kavitha announced here Thursday.

Kavitha paid tributes to Reddy on his 120th birth anniversary and garlanded his statue at the Tank Bund. Later, speaking at a function organised by Telangana Jagruthi, she recalled his outstanding contribution to literature and his opposition to the Nizam’s tyranny.

Kavitha said Reddy gave a fitting reply to Andhra poet Mudumbai Raghavacharyulu, who claimed there were no poets in Telangana, by releasing the Golconda Kavula Charitra comprising the stories of more than 120 prominent poets from the region.

Pratapa Reddy started libraries in every village and started a movement, she said and also pointed out that he was in the forefront of social movements and brought out several books including Andhrula Sanghika Charitra, a subaltern perspective on the history of Andhras.

Family members of Pratapa Reddy, poet Nandini Siddhareddy, Desapati Srinivas, Telangana Cultural Department director Mamidi Harikrishna, Prof SV Satyanarayana and a number of Telangana Jagruti workers participated in the programme.
