HYDERABAD: The BJP, which is looking towards Telangana as its gateway to south India, in all likelihood, may scuttle ruling TRS’ plans for 2019 elections.

The party, according to sources, would create trouble for TRS in the state by not taking up delimitation process of Assembly constituencies for 2019 elections as per the AP Reorganisation Act 2014.

But, how will that affect the TRS? According to BJP leaders, the TRS leadership is encouraging defections of other party MLAs and senior leaders into its fold with an assurance that either the defected leader or the one who contested the seat from its party unsuccessfully will be given a chance to contest in the newly-created Assembly seats.

The strength of TS Assembly is 120. As per the AP Reorganisation Act 2014, the number of Assembly seats have to be increased to 153.

Presently, the strength of TS Assembly is 120. As per the AP Reorganisation Act 2014, the number of Assembly seats have to be increased to 153.

Whenever an MLA of other party defected to TRS, the party leadership had assured to retain the seat to the leader or accommodate him in the newly-formed Assembly segment. “But the TRS leader who had contested from the seat unsuccessfully and also those who are in the party for long will also make a pitch for the seat. The TRS leadership convinced them that they would be given a chance in the newly-created Assembly seats. If the delimitation process is not initiated, TRS will face  rebellion by 2019 elections,” a senior BJP leader said. The BJP leadership is of the opinion that the TRS boat is already filled much more than it could hold. “With the other opposition parties not in a position to gain a foothold by 2019, BJP will be the only alternative and we are sure that this would benefit us,” the leader said.
