HYDERABAD: Pediatric surgeons opine that vasovagal shock might be the reason for the tragic death of Ibrahim, a five-year-old boy, following injuries to private parts. Vasovagal shock occurs when a person faints as his body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress.
Doctors opine that injury to private parts is dangerous, irrespective of age, and in the case of Ibrahim, who died after he was attacked by his schoolmate in Hyderabad, other health conditions might have also contributed.
“When a person suffers injuries to private parts, he undergoes a vasovagal shock. Whether it is an accident, fight or fall - depending on the intensity of the injury - the vasovagal shock occurs in varying degrees. Some times the shock might be unbearable and the person might die on the spot. Some times he might survive for some hours or days,” explained Dr K Ramesh Reddy, a pediatric surgeon. “Not just in case of injuries, even while performing surgeries to lower body parts, anesthesia should be administered perfectly and utmost care should be taken as they are sensitive, failing which the person might get a vasovagal attack,” he pointed out.
In the case of Ibrahim, he was hospitalised about five hours after sustaining injury.
Though he underwent a couple of surgeries, doctors could not save him.
