ADILABAD : In an alleged case of honour killing, a 17-year-old girl was strangled to death by her parents and grandmother on Friday. The incident occurred in Neradigonda mandal of Adilabad district. According to sources, the victim, Akhila, was in love with one Arke Mahender, who is her neighbour. The family opposed the affair as the youth belonged to another caste. The parents and grandmother walked into the police station and surrendered themselves after the murder. They confessed to the police that the act of their daughter had put their family honour at stake.

Akhila was studying Intermediate second year at a private college in Echoda mandal. Arke Mahender is working as a computer operator on outsourcing basis at the tahsildar office in Neradigonda.

According to police, Mahender went to Akhila's house to meet her on Thursday night. The girl's grandmother Champavathi found the youth along with the girl and raised an alarm.

It is said that Mahender went to the house as Akhila had informed that she wanted to end life as her parents might not accept their affair. The family members took serious note of the incident and lodged a complaint with the police who arrested Mahender.

After the incident, Akhila's father Chowhan Laxman Singh, mother Chandrakala and Champavathi had warned her against meeting Mahender again. But the girl insisted that she wanted to marry Mahender. Annoyed by this, the trio strangled Akhila to death with her chunni in the wee hours of Friday.

Neradigonda sub inspector S Venkanna said Akhila's family belonged to Mathura (a BC community) and her father is an RMP doctor at Neradigonda. Mahender is a member of Gond, an ST community from Neradigonda.
