Telangana's Rice Bowl Turns Arid Zone

NIZAMABAD : In Nizamabad it is 36 out of 36. A clean sweep. Drought conditions have swept across the district which was once hailed as rice bowl of Telangana.

With the Sri Ram Sagar and Nizam Sagar project areas turning arid, the cultivation in major parts of the district has come down drastically. The ground water levels have fallen drastically . The water levels have gone down to more than 20 metres in eight mandals and the worst scenario is in Bhiknoor mandal, where the water level went down to 38.98 metres in February.

Cultivation was taken up in not more than 35 percent area of the land in Kharif season and the yield was not more than 25 per cent.
