309 heat-related deaths in Telangana this summer

IMD said there was an appreciable fall in maximum temperatures at a few places over Telangana.

HYDERABAD: As many as 309 heat-related deaths have been reported in Telangana since the beginning of summer this year, state disaster management department said today.         

"These deaths were confirmed by the three-member committee (set up by the state government to assess cases of deaths related to heat). Nalgonda district tops the chart with 90 deaths followed by Mahbubnagar with 44 and Khammam 37," an official in the disaster management control room said.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its weather forecast bulletin, said light to moderate rain /thundershowers are very likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana due to the depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal.

It further said there was an appreciable fall in maximum temperatures at a few places over Telangana. The highest temperature of 44 degree Celsius was recorded at Adilabad.  

In view of the rising mercury in Telangana, the state government had earlier issued heatwave alerts to all districts, asking them to take precautionary measures.      

The government had also announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 50,000 to the kin of the deceased.
