HYDERABAD: After wreaking unprecedented havoc in the State capital Hyderabad, monsoon rains have begun expressing their fury on entire Telangana State. The torrential rains, which claimed the lives of six persons on a single day, on Friday, in various districts across the State, today claimed another three persons in Medak district alone.
A youngster was washed away in flash floods that occurred to Manjeera River in Ananth Sagar village of Narayankhed mandal in the Medak district. In another incident, two young men died when an old building in which they were living collapsed at Siddipet of the same district. Another person was injured in the incident. The building, which had soaked in the heavy rains lashing the district from the past one week, collapsed unexpectedly, police said.
At least 23 workers, who were working on a bridge were caught in Manjeera River floods in the Medak district itself. However, the workers swam to an island nearby and saved themselves.
In another mishap, a lorry hit a culvert of the bridge across the Manjeera River in Medak district. The Lorry was reportedly coming from Jaheerabad to Narayankhed. When the driver got confused on the way which was filled with flood waters, he rammed the lorry into the parapet making the motor vehicle hang on it.
Because of abundent rainfall, all major reservoirs in the State such as Nagarjuna Sagar, Singur, Nizam Sagar, Sriram Sagar and Yellampalli project are gradually reaching full reservoir levels. Right from Godavari, Krishna and Manjeera rivers to canals and streams in various parts of the State are in full spate throwing the normal life out of gear.
Medak, Warangal, Nalgonda and Khammam districts are worst-hit in the State with rivulets blocking road traffic, marooning low-lying areas and cutting road connectivity to some of the villages. Due to heavy rains, numerous rivulets which are flowing with high currents above the road level in these districts resulted in traffic dislocation in these districts. Crops and roads have been damaged extensively.
As much amount of water has reached Singur project in Medak district, some of the gates of the project have been lifted. Water level in Godavari River at Bhadrachalam is steadily increasing creating panic among people living in the low-lying areas.
Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will review the impact of heavy rains with officials from his camp office in a few minutes from, now. "CM KCR will interact with collectors of all districts through video conference to learn about the flood situation and the relief measures being taken. Revenue and other officials are preparing reports of loss to crops and other properties caused to floods," CMO officials stated.
