HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday called for reducing the minimum age limit for contesting in Assembly elections from 25 to 21 to encourage youth to join politics.
On Thursday, he attended Mock Assembly conducted at SCERT campus as part of the Children’s Day celebration. Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said that such productive meetings were necessary for society and urged students to pay more attention to the questions raised by the members of the Legislative Assembly and the answers given by the government. “Opposition parties have the responsibility of questioning and exposing the government. Equal opportunities are given to both the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. The Speaker owes the responsibility to run the House efficiently,” the chief minister said.
Stating that the government should run the House in a coordinated manner even if the Opposition creates a ruckus, he said it was unfortunate that some forces have, of late, been trying to stall the proceedings and get adjournments. The chief minister recalled that Jawaharlal Nehru, the first PM of the country, introduced a revolution in the education and agriculture sectors. “Today, we are getting opportunities because of the concerted efforts of such leaders,” he added.
“Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh worked hard to implement compulsory education in the country. Former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi is credited with reducing the age limit for voters to 18 from 21,” the CM recalled.
