A-Melting-Pot

And it is finally here. An exhibition that brings 40 independent Indian labels from various parts of India, titled 'Thank God For Design' is slated for September 23 and 24 at the Aga Khan Hall, Bhagwan Dass Road. Celebrating creativity and original design, the exhibition showcases the most exclusive products from across the board. This two-day design extravaganza is a unique platform for young and talented designers, helping them gain recognition all around the world. A brainchild of NIFT alumni, Jasleen Kaur and Supreet Raju, the show has its special focus on handwoven Ikats this year. ‘‘The contemporary Indian design scene has grown rapidly over the past few years, but unfortunately hasn’t received the attention it deserves. The multi-brand stores, re-sellers and foreign labels have shifted the focus from quality and innovation to just plain money-matics. The economics involved in keeping a label running, deprive many designers of creating a public space for promotions and making themselves seen and heard,’’ says Jasleen.

Apart from the regular stalls, it is also hosting a two-day workshop titled ‘Bring Your Own Shoe’ by footwear designer, Swati Modo. All shoppers can bring their old shoes and give them a makeover under her expert guidance. ‘‘This will give people a chance to understand what shape suits their foot the best, and gain insight about suitability of footwear,” says Swati.

Hasleen Kaur, Miss India Earth 2011, will be gracing the event and encouraging the talented designers as well as announcing the results for Thank God For Design Contest 2012 which was organised on their Facebook page and got 150 entries. ‘‘The idea behind the show and the competitions is to bring the Indian designer closer to their audience and making shoppers understand the heart, soul and effort that goes into creating a product from scratch. We made a start through our blog www.thankgodfordesign.com and began introducing the talented minds of India through the first ever Indian Design Directory and reviews, articles and advice. Now as a part of this initiative, we are bringing together 40 labels for a two days of shopping extravaganza. We’re positive this event will strike the right chord with Delhiites and they will come out in huge numbers to support the budding talent from India’s best design schools,’’ says Supreet adding, ‘‘We will take the enthusiasm from this event and grow this forum into the best place for promoting Indian labels, exchanging ideas and organising exhibits, conclaves and perhaps, even the first Indian Design Awards. Till then, this is a small step towards achieving our bigger dreams.’’
