Leaders Spew Communal Venom to Make Memon a Martyr

Executions concerning a disproportionate number of Hindus and non-Muslims puts a question mark over minority politics being played over Yakub Memon’s macabre fate.

NEW DELHI:  In states with high Muslim populations such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, the religious ratio of those who were executed by the state is dramatically skewed. In UP—home to the largest Muslim population in India—live 30,740,158 Muslims, or 18.49 per cent of the total residents of the state, according to the 2001 Census. The percentage of Muslims hanged in UP is around 12 per cent—or seven criminals of other faiths for every Muslim. In united Andhra Pradesh—which has 76,210,007 persons belonging to various faiths—the minority population is 6,986,856, or 7.4 per cent of the total. The ratio of Muslim convicts hanged is around 0.5 per cent. In West Bengal, where 27 per cent of residents are Muslims, the gallows rate is around 21.8 per cent—4.5 of non-Islamic faiths for each Muslim. Of 82,998,509 persons living in Bihar, Hindus are 66,076,919 while Muslims are 16,722,048, or 13 per cent of the total population. Here, researchers couldn’t find numbers of hangings since no records have been kept. Bihar doesn’t even have an official hangman.

REALITY CHECK.JPGNo one has been sent to the scaffold in Bihar since 1995, and the last person to be hanged was Suresh Chandra Bahri on June 12, 1995. Paramhans Yadav, convicted of killing Gopalganj DM MPN Sharma, was hanged in 1988. Bhola Sah suffered the same fate the same year. Mahavir Mahato and Parshuram Dhanuk were hanged in November 1983.

REALITY CHECK 1.JPGNo executions have been carried out in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Lakshadweep, Uttarakhand and the Northeastern states.

Executions concerning a disproportionate number of Hindus and non-Muslims puts a question mark over minority politics being played over Yakub Memon’s macabre fate.
