The awardees also included people who had given up drug addiction and were living model lives.
The awards given away by the minister, have been instituted by the Sun Foundation, a charitable institution operating from Delhi. The foundation was established in December 1998 in New Delhi by Vikramjit S Sahney, with the objective of helping and empowering the under-privileged sections of society.
The organisation provides training to women and disabled youth and and tries to empower them through skill development programmes. Gandhi invited the foundation to set up training centres in Phulkari embroidery for women in her constituency Pilibhit.
