Ladies' man fixes a bill

GUWAHATI: After ruling the world of Odia and Bengali cinema, actor Anubhav Mohanty has now turned his attention to the cause of women’s rights. The BJD Rajya Sabha MP has moved a private member’s bill in Parliament which seeks reservation for women not only in the Parliament but also in judiciary, Election Commission and even the Finance Commission.

The bill is one among the many initiatives I want to take to work for causes close to my heart,” he said. The bill mandates that 33 per cent of ministerial berths in the Union Council of Ministers are filled up from amongst the women MPs. It also seeks 33 per cent quota for women as judges in the SC, HCs or lower courts.

The bill calls for appointment of women on alternate terms as Governors and Lieutenant Governors.

Planning Commission of both the states and the centre should also have two mandatory women members, it says.
