Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Punjab, Harpreet Bajwa talks to Capt Amarinder Singh, Punjab Congress president on his strategy for the polls.
On Congress’s issues and agenda for elections.
Plight of the people is the key issue. From economic deterioration of the state to its industrial and agricultural regression, everything is gasping under the Badal regime. There is complete breakdown of law and order. Drugs, sand-gravel, liquor and land mafias have flourished because of the patronage of Badals and Majithia. We’ll
highlight these issues.
On the many factions within the party.
Congress is united with all its leaders collectively working to ensure its victory.
On his inaccessibility.
That is a myth created by my opponents. I have always been and always remain accessible to people of Punjab.
On his main electoral contenders: SAD or AAP?
There is no opposition to Congress and people are with us. They are waiting to throw the Badals out of their lives for good. AAP is a non-entity here.
On AAP’s support in case of a hung Assembly.
I don’t see the prospects of a hung Assembly. There’s a clear wave in favour of the Congress.
On letting Navjot Singh Sidhu, Pargat Singh and Bains brothers join the Congress.
Congress will be strengthened if anti-communal and anti-Badal forces join us. Congress is ready to consider their joining if it’s without any terms and conditions on their part.
On inviting Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi to campaign.
The top central Congress leadership—Soniaji, Rahul and also Priyanka—has always supported the state Congress and campaigned in Punjab..
On sending Badals and Majithia behind bars like the last time.
We will follow the legal procedure to get charges against them investigated. If they are guilty, we’ll throw them behind bars.
