THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Close on the heels of the government and the police launching various initiatives to check the exodus of migrant labourers from the state,  the Literacy Mission has also chipped in.  Beginning Saturday, the Literacy Mission will conduct week-long special meetings for migrant labourers to allay their fears, as part of its ‘Changathi’ literacy programme. Recently, a large number of migrant labourers had left the state in the wake of rumours about their persecution.

Currently, the Literacy Mission is engaged in implementing the ‘Changathi’ programme for migrants in one selected panchayat in each district. Besides allaying the concerns of the migrant labourers, the  ‘Souhrida Sangamam’ will  help establish a close connect between the preraks and the beneficiaries.
“Winning the confidence of the migrant population is very important for the success of our literacy initiatives. Through the state-wide meetings, we will convince the migrants about their safety and security in the state,” Literacy Mission Director P S Sreekala said.

Interactive sessions, lectures by literacy preraks and social workers and cultural programmes have been planned as part of the ‘Souhrida Sangamam’.   Besides allaying the fears and concerns of migrant labourers, they will also be informed about the various welfare measures launched for them by the government.  The Literacy Mission had successfully implemented the ‘Changathi’ programme in Perumbavoor town which has the largest settlement of migrant labourers in the state. The experience of closely interacting with the migrant population would give the Literacy Mission workers an edge in carrying out a successful awareness campaign, its senior officers said.
