Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency on July 13 as thousands of people mobbed the PM's office after the country's president flew to the Maldives following months of widespread protests against an economic crisis.

Sri Lanka's embattled president was stuck in his own country on July 12th in a humiliating standoff with airport immigration staff blocking his exit to safety abroad. Rajapaksa, who is due to officially resign on July 13 after months of demonstrations calling for him to step down, was reportedly trying to escape to Dubai on July 12th night. The 73-year-old leader fled his official residence in Colombo just before tens of thousands of protesters overran it on July 9. Gotabaya had promised to resign and clear the way for a "peaceful transition of power" following widespread protests against him over the country's unprecedented economic crisis.

The anti-government protesters in Sri Lanka who took over President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's official residence have claimed to have recovered millions of rupees inside his mansion. A video is being shared on social media showing the protesters counting the currency notes. The recovered money was said to be handed over to the security units, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported.

As protesters surged at the gates of the President's Palace, troops guarding the compound fired in the air to hold back the tide until Rajapaksa was safely removed.
