Shopian is one of the four militancy-hit districts in south Kashmir and has witnessed many fierce gunfights between militants and security forces over the years.
The clash between the terrorists and security forces broke out in the early hours of Tuesday when the on-duty police came under attack from heavily-armed terrorists. The forces retaliated.
The Divisional Commissioner directed all 10 DCs to identify government schools in villages, municipal wards of their districts that can be named after the slain security men.
The officials said as the forces were conducting searches in the area, the militants fired upon them.
Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Check Sadiq Khan area of south Kashmir district on Sunday after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants there.
This is the second gunfight in Kulgam district and the third in south Kashmir in the last two days.
Two Pakistani militants and as many soldiers, including a Naib Subedar, were killed in fierce gunfight near the Line of Control (LoC) in J&K’s Rajouri district on Thursday.
The encounter broke out between terrorists and security forces at Wagoora late night on Tuesday.
