The Mahadayi project is put on hold after Goa’s objection. However, in Karnataka, a proposal to divert 177 hectares of forest land to draw a high power transmission line for Goa is under process.
Goa and Karnataka are in a dispute over sharing water from Mahadayi river, and the states have filed special leave petitions before the Supreme Court in the matter.
The committee visited the site and held a marathon meeting on various issues related to the project.
After the Supreme Court ordered the formation of a JIC on February 22, Karnataka named its member on February 28. However, the Maharashtra government is yet to announce its member.
Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi on Monday denied that Karnataka has violated regulations concerning the sharing of Mahadayi river waters.
At the same time, the Karnataka government has written to heads of the Water Resources Departments in Maharashtra and Goa to immediately nominate their members to the committee.

Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi on Monday refuted Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s allegations that Karnataka diverted waters of Mahadayi river illegally.
Goa has accused Karnataka of carrying out construction to divert the river water without authorisation.
The NCP legislator said that as far as wildlife is concerned, tigers are important but as far as human beings are concerned, cows are important.
Sawant said the Goa government is firm on its stand that the Mahadayi river water should not be allowed to be diverted by Karnataka.
