AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami was detained by police officials, along with his supporters, for holding a hunger strike in Chennai’s Valluvar Kottam on Wednesday. The leaders were then detained by the police since they did not seek permission for holding the protest.
In a major setback for AIADMK leader E Palaniswami, the Madras High Court ruled that his appointment as the party's general secretary is not valid. It also reinstated former Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam as the coordinator of the AIADMK. On the issue of party leadership, the court has now ordered a status quo as on June 23. Justice G Jayachandran made it clear that the general council meeting can only be convened jointly by the coordinator and joint coordinator of the party. Hence, the general council meeting that happened on July 11, in which Edappadi K Palaniswami was made the interim general secretary, stands invalid.
The Election Commission has granted the ‘two-leaves’ symbol to unified AIADMK, the faction of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palanisamy and Deputy CM O Panneerselvam.
