According to the police, special raids are being conducted to prevent illegal transportation of PDS rice.
Of late, there has been a marked increase in the number of people arrested for attempting to sell PDS rice, meant to feed the poor, in the black market.
During the interrogation, the police didn't find any valid documents either on sales or transportation after which it was confiscated.
He informed that in the last one month, officials had conducted raids across the district at various rice mills, godowns.
Officials visited the village and found that the rice contains toxic elements like plastic, and have sent it for examination.
The Congress government, however, denied the charges and said it has been distributing more rice than the allocation made by the Centre under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana.
The police seized the trucks and a case was registered against the drivers. Meanwhile, the seized rice was shifted to civil supplies godown in Gannavaram.
The lorry, registered in Tamil Nadu, was illegally transporting 1,000 bags of PDS rice to Tamil Nadu from Nekarikallu town in Guntur district.
However, the issue seems to linger as just two days back, similar complaint of substandard rice under mid-day meal scheme was received from a primary school in Jeypore’s Dhanpur panchayat.
