The Union government discontinued the PMGKAY programme recently saying the economic situation has improved since Covid-19 cases have come down and restrictions have eased.
The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana was started in April 2020 to help the poor whose livelihoods were shuttered by a nationwide lockdown aimed.
The government is likely to give extension to Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana by another three months, as per government sources.
It was launched in March 2020 with an aim to mitigate hardships being faced by poor people in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Pradhan said of the total population of 130 crore in the country, 80 crore people are being provided Rs 5 kg rice free under PMGKAY.
