The earthquake occurred at a depth of 32.8 km (20.4 miles) near Hakha city, the capital of Chin state, sending tremors that spread across the border to towns and cities in India and Bangladesh
The quake, with epicentre in Kamrup district, hit the state at 1.12 pm, according to data from the National Center for Seismology.
People in the districts of western Assam and northern West Bengal ran out of their homes in panic.
The earthquake took place at 8.39 am and the epicentre was at Nagaon in central Assam, the National Center for Seismology said.
A National Center for Seismology report said the quake was recorded at 8.45 am, having an epicentre at Goalpara in Lower Assam at a depth of 14 km.
There was no immediate report of injury or damage to property.
The quake occurred at 09:50:50 IST at a depth of 24 kilometers and its epicentre was located at 44 kilometers west of Tezpur.
