WASHINGTON: US secretary of State Hillary Clinton slammed WikiLeaks in the strongest terms for going ahead with its threat to dump a quarter million classified diplomatic cables, but asserted that America’s relations with countries across the world would survive this onslaught.

A day after the revelations that also put her at the centre of a controversy over spying of foreign diplomats at the UN headquarters, Clinton said the leaks represented an attack not just on US foreign policy interests, but on the whole international community.

“The United States strongly condemns the illegal disclosure of these classified documents. It puts people’s lives in danger, threatens our national security, and undermines our efforts to work with other countries to solve shared problems,” she told a news conference.

At the same time, she sought to put up a brave front, saying, “I am confident that the partnerships that the Obama administration has worked so hard to build will withstand this challenge.” She referred to a particular conversation with a foreign official, who reportedly laughed off the disclosures, adding, “Don’t worry — you should hear what we say about you.” As though to stress the point that the disclosures have not grounded the State Department, Clinton left immediately after the news conference on a foreign visit that would take her to Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan, and Bahrain.
