BAGHDAD: Iraq Friday marked its first Army Day with a military parade in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone.

The occasion was celebrated by displaying the country's military prowess. Troops, armoured units and heavy weapons passed in front of a stand manned by Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki and foreign diplomats during the hour-long parade.

US troops had left the country a few weeks ago.

The parade was held under tight security and all roads leading to the area were closed, reports Xinhua.

However, the outer edge of the Green Zone was hit by several rockets fired by insurgents during the parade. No casualties were reported, the interior ministry said.
