MOSCOW: A US soldier has been detained after shooting dead at least 17 civilians near his base in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan Sunday morning, Afghan news agency Pazhvak reported quoting local people's representative Hadji Aghi Lalaya.

The American soldier walked out of an advanced US military base and opened fire on civilians, killing and wounding several, provincial governor Tooryalai Wesa said, though he did not provide an exact number.

"The incident happened. There are some people killed, some wounded. But I don't have the details," The Guardian quoted Wesa as saying.

NATO forces spokesperson Justin Brockhoff confirmed several people were wounded in the incident, but did not report any dead.

US forces are investigating the shooting.
