Turkey and Iran — at odds over the crisis in Syria — have jointly called for a cease-fire in the country during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and his Iranian counterpart, Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, made the appeal in the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Friday.
Iran is a strong ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad while Turkey has backed the Syrian opposition, including rebels fighting government forces. The two ministers said both Assad's forces and the rebels should observe the cease-fire.
Their opposing views emerged however, when, in response to a question on Turkey's support to opposition fighters, Davutoglu called for all non-Syrians involved in the conflict — including Iranian-backed fighters from the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah — to leave Syria.
