New political alliance for Tamils formed ahead of Lanka polls

Four political parties in Sri Lanka have formed a new alliance of Tamils of Indian-origin to contest the forthcoming Central Provincial Council election.

They newly formed alliance is to contest under the Upcountry People's Front (UPF).

P Radhakrishnan, a parliamentarian for UPF said a new alliance of four parties would contest the election to be held late September from the Nuwara Eliya district in the central hill tea plantation region.

"By forming the alliance we hope to be able to win more seats in the central provincial council", Radhakrishnan said.

Democratic Workers' Congress (DWC), Workers' Liberation Front and Democratic Left Front are the other constituent parties of the alliance.

All of them are allies of the ruling UPFA coalition at the center.

Prabha Ganesan, the leader of the DWC said they would campaign on the basis of opposing the move to amend the thirteenth amendment to the Constitution.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa government contemplates amending the 13A in order to deprive the powers of policing and land in the provinces ahead of the northern provincial council election.

The nominations for the central, north western and northern provincial councils would be accepted from tomorrow until August 1 when the date for the election would be announced.

The new alliance would field candidates in the other districts in the central province in addition to fielding candidates for the Vavuniya district in the north, Radhakrishnan said.
