Gunmen kill 2 in attack on police in Pakistan

Police and hospital officials say gunmen have ambushed a vehicle carrying a senior police officer in northwest Pakistan, wounding him and killing one of his guards and a driver.

Police official Zahid Khan says the assailants attacked Gul Wali Khan, deputy commander of the Frontier Reserve Police, when he was going to his office in the northwestern city of Peshawar on Thursday.

A hospital spokesman, Jamil Khan, says Gul Wali Khan received multiple bullet wounds, and doctors were trying to save his life.

No one immediately claimed responsibility, but suspicion will likely fall on the Pakistani Taliban.

Peshawar is located on the border of Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region, the main sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida militants in the country.
