Prosecutors in the Oscar Pistorius case have been given permission by South Africa's National Director of Public Prosecutions to add two firearm charges to the indictment against the double-amputee athlete, who is already accused of murder and illegal possession of ammunition.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Nathi Mncube tells The Associated Press the charges were already raised against Pistorius but were not in his original indictment in August because the offenses are alleged to have occurred in a different jurisdiction to Pistorius' shooting of his girlfriend.

Mncube declined to detail the charges, saying they related to "the contravention of the firearm controls act," but they are believed to relate to Pistorius allegedly shooting guns in public places.

Pistorius' family spokesperson said they did not want to comment on "legal aspects."
