Turkey seizes 10 tonnes of cannabis

The Turkish army has seized more than 10 tonnes of cannabis in a large-scale operation in the country's southeastern part, Governor of Turkey's Diyarbakir province Cahit Kirac said Sunday.

About 500 troops of Turkish security forces, 25 teams of Turkish gendarme forces and police took part in the anti-drugs operation in Lice town of Diyarbakir province Saturday, Kirac was quoted as saying by Dogan news agency, Xinhua reported.

The governor said that more than 10 tonnes of drugs were confiscated.

The campaign was one of the "largest anti-drug operation" in the past few years, Kirac said.

Turkey has long been a key transit point along the drug smuggling route from Asia and Middle East to Europe.
