Court Reserves Order on Giving Musharraf FIA Report

The special court trying Pakistan's former president Pervez Musharraf for treason Friday resumed hearing in the case and reserved its order on his demand for the Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) investigation report.

The three-judge court, headed by Justice Faisal Arab of the Sindh High Court, heard the case Friday, The News International reported.

During the hearing, Musharraf's lawyer Farogh Nasim said the trial should be fair or else it should not take place at all.

Along with the investigation report, all other documents related to the case should also be provided, Nasim added.

As he was arguing, Nasim also put forth the fact that, though there was the Official Secrets Act in the country, the investigative report did not fall within the purview of that act.

Justice Arab said that if it was a secret, the report would not have been broadcast on the media.

The court saved the order on providing the FIA report to Musharraf and adjourned the hearing till April 28.

The former military strongman has been charged with high treason for suspending the constitution when he declared Emergency rule in 2007.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

He assumed power in Pakistan in a bloodless coup when he dismissed the government of then prime minister Nawaz Sharif in 1999.

Musharraf resigned in 2008 as president and went into exile, but returned to Pakistan in March last year to run in the parliamentary elections. 

However, a court disqualified him from contesting in the general elections held in May 2013.
