TOKYO: At least 11 people were killed on Wednesday near a nursing home in Japan's northeastern Iwate prefecture after powerful Typhoon Lionrock made landfall in the region.

Lionrock, the 10th typhoon of the season, swept across Japan on Tuesday evening, forcing municipalities in the area to issue extensive evacuation orders, Xinhua news agency reported.
