Trump wins California, seals landslide victory in US primaries

WASHINGTON: The presumptive Republican nominee, Donald Trump, won in California and cemented his landslide victory in the Republican primaries, leading him to confront the presumptive Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton in the US presidential elections in November.

The New York business mogul, the only remaining candidate in the Republican race, on Tuesday roundly won in California and the other four states in contention: New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota and Montana, EFE news reported.

California is the most populous US state and it rewards the winner with 172 delegates.

Before learning of the results in California, Trump appeared in front of his supporters in New York, where he promised that he would never "disappoint" and said that he has beaten "a rigged system".

A few weeks ago, Trump had already achieved the 1,237 delegates needed to secure his Republican nomination at the party convention in Cleveland, Ohio, in July, after a controversial campaign in which he directly criticised the Republican party and Hispanic immigrants.

In his speech on Tuesday night, he took aim directly at Clinton.

"The Clintons have turned the politics of personal enrichment into an art form for themselves," he said, while announcing a press conference next week that will uncover secrets of Hillary and her husband, former President Bill Clinton.
