ISLAMABAD: A high court in Pakistan today adjourned till August 2 the hearing of appeals filed by jailed former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law against their conviction in a corruption case.
Sharif, 68, his daughter Maryam, 44 and his son-in-law Capt (retd) Mohammed Safdar were convicted by a National Accountability Court on July 6 in the Avenfield corruption case and are currently in the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi.
The jailed three-time prime minister has been shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) from the jail on July 29 after his condition deteriorated due to the heart ailment. They had filed appeals against their conviction in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
Sharif had also filed an application to transfer two other graft cases againt him to another anti-corruption court.
During the hearing today, the former prime minister's counsel Khawaja Haris argued in favour of shifting the Al-Azizia steel mills and Flagship cases to another court. The two-member bench comprising -- Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb -- after hearing the initial arguments by the defence lawyer, adjourned the hearing in the case till August 2.
The petitions for suspension of the anti-graft court's July 6 judgment were not heard today due to lack of time, and it was also adjourned till August 2. The cases were filed against Sharif and his family last year, after a Supreme Court verdict.
The Avenfield cases about illegal properties in London involved Sharif, daughter Maryam, sons Hassan and Hussain and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar.
Sharif, Maryam and Safdar have been convicted while the former prime minister's two sons were declared absconders.
