Donald Trump Jr has a business agenda for India

Donald Trump Jr, the eldest son of US President Donald Trump, arrived in India on Tuesday for a week-long business trip.

NEW DELHI: Donald Trump Jr, the eldest son of US President Donald Trump, arrived in India on Tuesday for a week-long business trip. He kick-started his India tour in Gurugram meeting real estate developers, who are building the Trump-branded complexes in four cities.

The Trump Organization has licensing pacts with local business partners M3M and Tribeca Developers for constructing 254 apartments in a price bracket of Rs 5.5 crore to Rs 11 crore with a total area of 3,500-4,500 sq ft at Gurugram. The project is scheduled for completion in March 2023.

After Delhi, Trump Jr will visit Kolkata where the New York-based company has partnership with Indian realtors for developing a Rs 600-crore project.

Since its entry into the Indian real estate market in 2014, four Trump Towers with a total revenue potential of Rs 9,600 crore have been launched across Pune, Mumbai, Gurugram and Kolkata, making India its biggest international market.

The fifth Trump branded project, which is expected to be a commercial office project, is likely to be launched soon.

According to sources, junior Trump held a closed-door meeting with top industrialists in Delhi and Mumbai. When asked why The Trump Organization chose to build luxury apartments in India before China, junior Trump, who is a regular visitor to India, said India is “substantially above board” for business compared to China and reforms, which are underway, will help attract investments from countries such as the US.

While the company is not seeking new business opportunities during the duration of Donald Trump’s presidency to avoid conflict of interest, his son said the focus would remain on building only luxury and high-end apartments. Although Trump Jr has made it clear it is purely a business trip, international media and watchdogs are being critical of his visit as they see a conflict of interest.

Later in the week, Trump Jr is scheduled to share stage with Prime Minister Modi and make a speech about Indo-Pacific relations at a New Delhi business summit.
