BBMP to deploy 12 Home Guards at Bellandur Lake

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will deploy 12 Home Guards in shifts around Bellandur Lake to ensure that garbage is not dumped there.

BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will deploy 12 Home Guards in shifts around Bellandur Lake to ensure that garbage is not dumped there. A patrolling vehicle will also do the rounds at night. All these initiatives will begin on Monday.

On Friday, Urban Development Department  (UDD) Additional Chief Secretary Mahendra Jain had conducted a meeting with all the civic agencies and laid out a road map for the revival of Bellandur Lake.

The plan requires BBMP to install CCTV cameras and take steps to prevent garbage dumping in the lake.

BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad said, “Four Home Guards will work in three shifts. There are already five CCTV cameras, and depending on the requirement, we will put up more cameras. We will set up focus lights as well. We are taking up fogging on alternate days.”

Similarly, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board and Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority (KLCDA) will be accountable for wetland development.

KLCDA CEO G Vidyasagar said, “The plans for wetland development are being prepared by Prof TV Ramachandran of IISc which will be ready by Saturday. After that, we will look at the cost and other things, and a decision  on whether to go for tendering process or not will be taken.”

Bangalore Development Authority will be responsible for removal of debris and deweeding, and the agency is in the stage of finalising the tender. Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has to ensure that industries around the lake are shut and prevent sewage inflow into the lake. KSPCB has already issued notices to 97 industries so far, out of the 488 identified.
