BENGALURU: Motorists and pedestrians frequenting the traffic junction near Minsk Square in front of Cubbon Park Metro Station have a number of issues here.

Rajkumar Dugar, general secretary of the Vasanthanagar Resident Welfare Association frequents this particular junction and explains the problem.

The main issue is with the huge block of footpath that is in the middle of the junction says Rajkumar. Cars coming from either Chinaswamy Stadium or Cubbon Road face obstruction because of this big footpath projection when going towards Raj Bhavan Road according to him. “Say I am on the right side of the road on Chinaswamy Stadium and want to go towards GPO and there are four other vehicles that want to go the same way. Due to the footpath projection one will find it very difficult to go this way,” he says.

Ajay Tandon, a businessman frequents this particular area and says he is extremely “irritated” with the footpath projection. “If you are careful enough to notice the projection from a distance then good for you. However for a driver who is not so aware it might lead to some accident if he or she notices it in the last moment,” he says. Pedestrians also have to run and cross the road on this particular stretch, most of the time, he adds.

Another problem is that of vehicles not following the rules and making U-turns at whim. “For example there are a number of vehicles that take a U-turn towards GPO after coming from the New Indian Express junction instead of taking a designated road right before the Minsk Square traffic junction,” adds Tandon.

A traffic official says that rather than the design it is the unruly motorists who do not obey rules that are the problem. “Vehicles freely cross from road near Chinnaswamy Stadium and go towards Cubbon Road instead of taking a U turn from GPO road. We cannot monitor everything,” he says.

The official also says that without the outward projection, vehicles would easily cross and take over other vehicles and this serves as measure to keep such vehicles in check.
