BENGALURU: Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has decided to review the decision on shifting the Metro station from near the Cantonment railway station to a playground at New Bamboo Bazaar a little distance away.

Besides this, sources said the composition of earth where the drilling for the underground tunnel and station will happen will also be studied once again. “Once the exercise is completed, both options will be placed before the government. It will be up to them to take a decision on which alignment to choose,” a BMRCL official said. However, news of the survey brought cheer to a large section of commuters who have steadfastly opposed shifting of the station to Bamboo Bazaar.

A massive campaign, both online and on the streets, was launched in order to convince BMRCL to reverse its decision. This included surveys from commuters, an online campaign with over 35,000 signatures as well as a round-table discussion. The campaign had also received support from several Bengaluru MPs.

Timeline
BMRCL publishes alignment of Reach 6 including the new position of the Cantonment Metro Station in July.
Vasanthnagar residents immediately question the shifting of the station. This will affect the integration of both stations, they say.
Residents on Bamboo Bazaar Street also oppose move as it would take away the playground for a few years till the Metro station is constructed.
Commuters, who regularly use the railway station launch signature campaign
BMRCL justifies move citing cost savings & technical factors but this is not accepted by protesters
BMRCL sticks to its stand, however pressure on it mounts as all reasons stated by it are challenged by many. An online signature campaign generates over 35,000 signatures against the shifting of the station.
BMRCL commences re-survey.
