BENGALURU: Thousands of fish were found dead at the Araluru lake near Somasundarapalya on Saturday. Locals blamed it on the release of effluents from industries nearby.

Locals said that it has been three days since the fish began to die in large numbers. They added that officials of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike have not yet responded to their concerns.

Srinivasa, who had taken the lake on lease to breed fish, said he had suffered a loss of at least Rs 15 lakh. “I took the lake on lease and was rearing catla and rohu Fish. I had invested a lot. In the last three days, thousands of fish have died,” he said. He said that he had contacted the officials concerned with lake management at the Mahadevpura BBMP zonal office, but they passed the buck saying it was an issue with the storm water drain.

“The water from nearby apartments and industries are being let into the lake without being treated,” he claimed.  BBMP Commissioner was unavailable for comment.  In 2016, thousands of fish in Ulsoor lake had died due to large-scale dumping of solid waste into the water body.
