Bitcoin ATM co-founder arrested by Central Crime Branch in Bengaluru

BENGALURU:  Co-Founder and Chief Financial & Compliance Officer of Unocoin Technologies Pvt Ltd, which had set up India’s first ATM kiosk to trade in cryptocurrencies at Kemp Fort Mall in Bengaluru, has been arrested by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) police on Tuesday.

The accused is identified as Harish B V (37), a resident of Jayanagar West in Tumakuru. He is one of the four co-founders of Unocoin which claims to be India’s first entrant in the bitcoin space.

The ATM was expected to be operational soon for its registered customers.  

The CCB police, who took up a suo motu case, seized a cryptocurrency device, two laptops, a mobile phone and cash Rs 1.79 lakh from Harish.

“The accused conspired with others and had set up the kiosk without permission from the government. He indulged in cryptocurrency trading illegally and had also set up the kiosk to draw more customers. The accused has been taken into police custody,” the police said.
