Cops suspect girl leapt to her death off terrace

Say entries in Logamithra’s notebook indicate suicide angle

CHENNAI: “I love you mummy. I cried mummy...” these tender words were the last the 9-year-old I Logamithra had scribbled in her school note and police now suspect that she did not die of an accidental fall from her school building, but possibly a suicide.

The child, a class IV student of SRM Nightingale Matriculation Higher Secondary School, fell from the terrace of a four-storey building in the school at West Mambalam on Friday during lunch break. The school had asked parents of the children to visit the school to collect the progress report of the students.
The girl succumbed to injuries a few hours later in a private hospital. Another note recovered from the child’s school bag read, “I am sorry teacher. I thank you all my friends.” This has led the police to suspect whether the girl had leaped to death from the building.

“Investigations point out that it could be a suicide. We recovered these notes left by the child,” said G Harikumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Ashok Nagar). When asked if the parents meeting on the progress report was the reason, the officer said they were yet to ascertain the exact reason and the investigators have to talk to the child’s classmates.

“But we strongly believe the school to be negligent as they did not appoint a security to monitor the entrance to the terrace when they knew the area was under repair work,” Harikumar said.
