Pachaiyappa's reopens amidst police protection

CHENNAI : Pachaiyappa’s College, which was closed last week following a clash between two groups of students, was reopened on Monday amidst police protection and a strict no-entry for latecomers.

Last Thursday, six students of the college were arrested after a large group of students surrounded two students from a rival gang and assaulted them on the college campus. A few of the students involved were found to be carrying weapons like knives too.

In an effort to send a stern message, 65 students of the college were suspended and the college was closed for two days.

When the college reopened on Monday, heavy police protection was put in place surrounding the campus to prevent the occurrence of any untoward incident. Students were allowed to enter inside the classes only after being thoroughly frisked by the college staff.

In most cases, the latecomers were ‘trouble creators’ and in an attempt to bring this to an end, the college gates were closed at exactly 9.30 am, said the principal S Kaliraj.

He added that though the attendance was low (less than 50%) on Monday, stringent norms were the the only way to keep this in check.

A letter has been sent to the parents of the 65 students who were suspended last week. A counselling session was planned for them along with their wards on Wednesday and Thursday (September 28 and 29).  Following this, they will be allowed to attend classes, the college principal said.
