CHENNAI: A mother and daughter were found murdered with severe slit injures on their neck and back in their apartment in a busy street in Saidapet on Wednesday evening. Police suspect they were killed over some domestic issue.

The crime was noticed after a neighbour went around 7.15 pm to meet Hemalatha (51). When her knocks at the door went unanswered, she claimed she peeped through the window and found Hemalatha and her daughter Jayalakshmi (22) in a pool of blood with cut injuries. She then alerted the police who reached the spot and sent the bodies to the Royapettah Government Hospital for autopsy.

While Hemalatha was as a typist at Anna University, Jayalakshmi was pursuing her third-year civil engineering course in a private college in the city.  Hemalatha’s husband Shanmugam died a year ago and the duo was staying alone on the ground floor of a two-storied block of apartments on KPK Kovil Street. There are 10 other apartments in the housing complex.

Hemalatha’s son Balamurugan (25) had quit his job in a private company a few months ago. Police tried to reach him but his phone was switched off. They are yet to trace him.

Police said it was not a case of murder for gain as all jewels and cash were intact in the house. Sniffer dogs were pressed into action and finger prints lifted from the crime scene. Senior police officers rushed to the spot and questioned neighbours. They are scanning CCTV footage in the locality to trace the suspect.

A case has been registered by the Saidapet police and further investigations are on.
