1.9 kg gold recovered from air passengers

The Air Intelligence Unit of Customs seized 1.9 kg gold worth around `58 lakh from  passengers in the last four days, according to Rajan Chaudhary, Commissioner of Customs, Anna International Airport.

CHENNAI: The Air Intelligence Unit of Customs seized 1.9 kg gold worth around `58 lakh from  passengers in the last four days, according to Rajan Chaudhary, Commissioner of Customs, Anna International Airport. Sleuths foiled a bid to smuggle 930 grams gold worth `27.7 lakh by Mohammed Mohideen who arrived from Dubai on an Emirates flight on Saturday, he said.

He was carrying the gold in power supply units for personal computer. Once the power supply units were opened by customs on suspicion, it was found that gold had been embedded on the circuit boards of transformers. The passenger was subsequently arrested, Rajan Chaudhary, Commissioner of Customs said.
In a separate case, 350 grams of gold worth `10.3 lakh was seized from Madampara Sharif, who hid the gold inside his rectum. The passenger arrived from Dubai by Indigo Airlines flight on Saturday.

In two other cases, 388 grams of gold worth `11.5 lakh was recovered from a passenger Abdul Samad who arrived from Dubai by Indigo Airlines flight while 209 grams of gold worth `6.2 lakh was seized from a passenger Parvees Abdul Azeez who arrived from Dubai by an Air India flight. In both the cases, the gold was concealed in pockets of full trousers, the official said.
