Gang barges into class, attacks Silambattam tutor, students in Chennai

The city police have arrested three men who allegedly assaulted an RSS member in Nungambakkam on Sunday night. The trio were arrested on Monday evening and remanded.

CHENNAI: The city police have arrested three men who allegedly assaulted an RSS member in Nungambakkam on Sunday night. The trio were arrested on Monday evening and remanded.
A police officer said, “Venugopal (38) resides at Purasawalkam and teaches silambattam at Lake View Road at the Nungambakkam corporation ground. Last evening, some men came to the ground and started an argument with Venugopal, asking him to leave the place as they were going to play cricket. But he resisted them, telling them about his status in the RSS movement. Though the men left, they came back after sometime with some 12 men and barged into the class and attacked Venugopal and his students.”

Three men including the tutor Venugopal were injured and lodged a complaint with Nungambakkam police. Meanwhile, the RSS workers gheraoed the police station on Monday morning, demanding immediate action against the culprits.Subsequently, the police arrested R Mahesh (30), a first-time offender, and M Dili Babu (32) and S Siva (31), who are history-sheeters holding some position in the DMK, said the police. The three men were remanded in judicial custody.

Notorious rowdy arrested
Saravanan alias ‘Bomb’ Saravanan (41), a notorious rowdy who has been in the hiding for over a year, was arrested from his hideout at Periyapalam in Tiruvallur district late on Sunday. Police said Saravanan has over 28 cases pending against him, including six murder cases. “He is known for making country bombs and hence called ‘Bomb’ Saravanan.

He was also involved in two country bomb attack cases registered in Pulianthope and Ennore police stations. He has been hiding for over a year and we got a tip-off that he was holed up in Tiruvallur. A special team was formed and he was nabbed. Knives and other sharp weapons were also seized from him,” said  police.
