PIL seeks safety doors in all Chennai suburban trains

CHENNAI: A PIL petition has been filed in the Madras High Court for a directive to railways to fix safety doors in all coaches of suburban and MRTS trains originating from Chennai. A division bench of Justices M Venugopal and M Nirmal Kumar, before which the PIL came up for hearing on Friday, ordered notice to the Additional Government Pleader, representing the State government and to the standing counsel for railways, returnable by August 7.

Petitioner contended that railways did not take any corrective measure even after six commuters died at the St Thomas Mount station  a few days ago. He wanted railways to introduce automatic doors in suburban coaches as has been done by Metro Rail for its trains. It is the duty of the railway management to install forthwith safety doors in each compartment so as to prevent recurrence of such tragic incidents in future, the petitioner said.
