NEW DELHI: Be ready to pay more for residing in Delhi University as the varsity is planning to hike the fee at all the hostels.
First step to take in this direction is the Delhi University’s DS Kothari hostel which has decided to hike the hostel fee to generate money for security resource and mess. The hostel has doubled the fee as compared to the minimum fee from Rs.1200 from Rs.2400 per month. The kothari hostel is one of the premiere hostels of DU that has 38 double seated rooms and 19 single seated rooms to accommodate postgraduate students and research scholars.
The agenda passed by the Kothari hostel management committee reads “The committee has decided that an additional amount of Rs 1200 be charged from each resident in order to meet the deficit under the other contract services”. Further, the DU hostel committee observed that in spite of repeated requests the university, has not enhanced the provision under the head other contract services’.
A senior varsity official informed that other hostels in the varsity are also expected to hike the fees. "We have started from one hostel, to check the response. Soon all the hostels will increase the minimum rent" the official said.
“According to the news guidelines, we have to pay to minimum wage to the security in which students are also partially involved to generate money. Because the university is not granting fund so the hostel can’t bear to manage. So to meet the resources the students also need to contribute” said S.C.Rai, provost, DS Kothari hostel.
Meanwhile, the hostel has also restricted the entry timing for the girl students as compared to boys. According to the notification, the visiting hours for male residents is 8.am to 8.p.m while for the female it is 8.am to 7 p.m.
There are about 18 hostels that are maintained by DU, most of them in the north campus. There are about seven female hostels among them. Hostels maintained by University are mostly for PG and research students. And 17 colleges are there at the college level reserved mostly by the Under Graduate (UG) students.
As the varsity hostels are also slowly going towards the “self finance” mode by hiking the fees. The student union of Delhi University has enraged against the hostel committee over the fee hike.
